Summary, model-written

Beauty World Market opened in 1947 as an open-air market in Bukit Timah, Singapore. It expanded with the adjacent Beauty World Town in 1962, saw hawkers relocated in 1968, and was acquired by the Singapore government in 1975. The market closed in 1983 and was demolished in 1984 due to frequent fire outbreaks; the site now holds two parking lots and Beauty World MRT Station.

Why. The demolition was driven by frequent fire outbreaks that affected the market and surrounding area, as noted in the narrative excerpt.

Where it stands. The site is currently occupied by two parking lots and Beauty World MRT Station, under the stewardship of the Singapore government (which acquired the land in 1975).

For a planner

  • Precedent: demolition for safety reasons followed by conversion to transport infrastructure and parking.
  • Policy tools used: government land acquisition (1975), zoning change to retail, entitlement approval in 1977.
  • Open questions: long-term land use vision for the parcel, integration with future MRT extensions, potential for higher-density redevelopment.

For a developer

  • Control: land held by the Singapore government since 1975; post-1984 ownership not detailed in record.
  • Entitlement stage: entitlement year 1977 suggests planning approvals were in place prior to demolition.
  • Constraints: no flood, transit, or environmental data provided in the record.
  • Market signals: tract-level market data absent; demand for adjacent uses unknown.

What we do not know yet

  • Site dimensions and current ownership status after 1984 are not specified.
  • Flood risk, transit accessibility beyond the existing MRT station, and environmental constraints are unknown.
  • Market demand and potential redevelopment value lack tract data in the record.
  • Verification status is 'draft', indicating data may be model-extracted and unreviewed.
  • Any pending planning proposals or community plans for the site are not mentioned.
