Background
Villawood is a suburb in Western Sydney in the state of New South Wales, Australia. A residential and industrial suburb, Villawood is part of the local government areas City of Canterbury-Bankstown and City of Fairfield, and is located 27 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district. Villawood is the site of the former post-war Villawood Migrant Hostel, which was later converted into the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre. Originally intended as a temporary solution to Sydney's post-war accommodation shortage, the hostel remained in operation for decades as persistent housing shortages made it difficult for many migrants to secure permanent housing.
